The wild yam is also known as Dioscorea. The yam is similar to the common potato, but has special characteristics: it is a twisted climbing plant with heart-shaped leaves that can grow up to six meters high. The perennial plant is native to North and Central America, where it prefers to grow in humid locations. However, there are also some varieties in the tropics or in Africa. In Europe, the yam forms a tuber with a thick root and is similar in taste and appearance to the sweet potato. This plant is rich in nutrients, including diosgenin. But also vitamins, antioxidants, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper and iron. Due to its high nutrient content, the yam is an important staple food in many countries and is used in traditional medicine. Even the Native Americans used it in this way, and it is no wonder that they gave it the name "woman's plant".
Wild Yam 50+ from EnergyBalance contains 80 mg diosgenin per serving, calcium and vitamin D. Calcium and vitamin D contribute to the maintenance of normal bones; calcium and vitamin D contribute to normal muscle function.

Lithothamnium calcareum
One of the ingredients of Wild Yam 50+ is a highly mineralized type of calcareous algae: Lithothamnium calcareum. As the name suggests, this seaweed is characterized by its ability to store minerals in its cells, especially calcium carbonate. It grows mainly in the cold waters of the North and Northeast Atlantic. Lithothamnium calcareum is often used in health products and food supplements.

Does wild yam have an effect on hormones?
An important ingredient in yam is diosgenin, which is a precursor of the human corpus luteum hormone progesterone. Alongside oestrogen, progesterone is an essential component of the female hormone balance and is produced in the ovaries. Progesterone regulates the processes of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and embryonic development in the female body. The hormone plays a particularly important role in the second phase of the menstrual cycle and during the menopause.
In 1942, the American researcher Russell Marker developed a chemical process that made it possible to produce the hormone progesterone in the laboratory from diosgenin. And he was very successful. In the mid-1970s, Mexico was forced to impose a temporary ban on the export of wild yams due to excessive demand... The Russell-Marker process is still used today for the production of the contraceptive pill.
