5-HTP – the direct precursor of serotonin
Humor, sleep, appetite and sexual behavior are to varying degrees dependent on 5-HTP. 5-HTP is extracted from Griffonia simplicifolia (called "black African bean"); it has been used for over 30 years as a medicine, to increase serotonin production and thus to improve sleep, humor and well-being, as well as the effect of other related neurotransmitters.
It seems that 5-HTP present in the body has several roles including:
- Antidepressant activity
- To contrast insomnia
- Improving the quality of sleep
