Red clover, also known as Wild Trifolium, belongs to the legume and pea family (Fabaceae). The plant prefers clayey, mineral-rich soils but also thrives on sandy and peat soils. It avoids acidic or poorly drained soils.
Red clover has the ability to fix nitrogen from the air, enriching the soil with important nutrients and improving soil quality and fertility. As a protein-rich forage plant, it is also highly valued by grazing animals. Bees and butterflies use the long flower tubes as a food source.
Red clover provides valuable minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, B vitamins (niacin, thiamine), and vitamin C. Additionally, it contains secondary plant compounds such as flavonoids, coumarins, salicylates, glycosides, and essential oils.
Particularly interesting is the combination of isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, formononetin, and biochanin A), which belong to the phytoestrogens. These secondary plant compounds contribute to a balanced diet and are relevant for both women and men.
