Macular Pigment Density
Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) is an indicator of macular health and consequently of an individual's visual functionality. The higher the density, the better the health status of the eye. In a 2011 LISA study (Lutein Intervention Study Austria, 2011, Günther Weigert et al.), macular pigment density (MPOD) was measured twice in 126 subjects with macular degeneration (AMD)* in stages 2, 3, and 6.
* Macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial disease affecting the central area of the retina, known as the macula. It is progressive and can lead to complete and irreversible loss of central vision. In industrialized countries, it is the leading cause of low vision in people over 50 years old. It is almost always bilateral.
Measuring Macular Pigment
Your optometrist can measure macular pigment density using a special screening device. This is a very quick, painless, and non-invasive examination. In a 2009 study conducted by Rob L. P. van der Veen et al., macular pigment density was measured in 5581 subjects of both sexes; the average age of participants (between 20 and 90 years) was 52 years, and the average value was 0.330: specifically, 0.335 for males and 0.326 for females.
